Lagos Waterway Regulators Launch Joint Festive Safety Campaign as Boat Travel Surges

Lagos authorities have launched a joint safety and security campaign ahead of an expected rise in boat travel this December, stepping up patrols and enforcing stricter compliance measures to prevent accidents across the state’s busy waterways.

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) said the collaboration will boost coordination among security agencies, vessel operators and coastal communities as thousands of commuters turn to ferries during the festive season.

“Safety on our waterways is not negotiable,” the Special Adviser to the Governor on the Blue Economy said in a statement. “This collaboration with NIWA amplifies our enforcement capacity and improves coordination with security agencies, vessel operators and local communities to ensure a secure and joyful festive season for all waterway users.”

Under the joint safety strategy, LASWA and NIWA will carry out enhanced patrols with the Marine Police and community volunteers along major routes, including night operations. They will also conduct joint safety checks on commercial passenger boats, random inspections of life jackets and equipment, and stricter enforcement of operational licences.

Authorities said real-time monitoring of weather and water conditions will guide advisories to operators, with potential route changes if hazards arise. The regulators also reaffirmed a strict zero-alcohol policy for both passengers and crew.

NIWA Lagos Area Manager said the success of the campaign also depends on passengers and operators playing their part. “This season is a time for celebration, and we can only achieve safe and enjoyable travels when everyone, regulators, operators and passengers, plays their part,” he said. “Together, we will ensure safe navigation and compliance on all waterways.”

Passengers are urged to wear life jackets, avoid overloaded boats and report unsafe conditions, while operators must ensure valid licences, complete passenger manifests and maintain trained crews.

LASWA encouraged commuters to follow its official channels for real-time travel alerts and safety advisories as festive activities peak.
