AWKA, Nigeria – The wife of Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, on Monday urged individuals and organisations to make regular visits to orphanages and welfare homes a habit, saying consistent human connection is critical to addressing the emotional and social needs of vulnerable people.
Soludo made the call while hosting a Christmas party for children and adults drawn from orphanage and welfare homes across the state, stressing that support should go beyond donations of food and clothing.
“Visiting orphanages and welfare homes should not be limited to festive periods alone,” she said. “We must make it a habit to visit, listen to their stories, understand their challenges and respond to their needs both physically and emotionally.”
She said many residents of orphanages and welfare centres grapple with emotional trauma, neglect and social isolation, challenges she said could only be tackled through regular interaction, encouragement and understanding.
“While the party is going on, I will be having one-on-one conversations with the teenagers in the orphanage homes to better understand their struggles and explore ways we can support them,” Soludo said.
According to her, emotional support, counselling and reassurance are as important as providing basic necessities, noting that such gestures could positively influence the outlook and future of beneficiaries.
She called on well-meaning individuals and organisations to complement government efforts by adopting welfare homes and sponsoring healthcare and education for residents, while also engaging them in meaningful conversations and activities that promote dignity and self-worth.
Soludo reaffirmed the commitment of her Healthy Living Initiative to the welfare, protection and holistic development of vulnerable persons across Anambra, urging residents to embrace compassion and shared responsibility, especially during the yuletide season.
“No one should be left behind,” she said.
Also speaking at the event, the state Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo, commended caregivers at the various homes for their sacrifices and dedication to the wellbeing of the children and adults in their care.
The celebration featured dance competitions, carol singing, drama performances, visits to Santa Claus and the distribution of Christmas gifts to the children.
