The Lagos State Waterways Authority said it will launch an 18-month ferry safety training and mentoring programme this week in partnership with Interferry, aiming to raise safety standards and operational efficiency across Nigeria’s inland waterways.
The initiative, described by officials as a first-of-its-kind in Africa, will provide structured mentorship from international ferry experts alongside contributions from local maritime institutions, companies and regulators. Interferry holds consultative status at the International Maritime Organization.
A cohort of 50 participants, including ferry captains, engineers, safety officers and fleet managers—has been selected following a verification process completed on March 18, 2026, LASWA said in a statement.
The programme will cover ferry design and construction, safety management systems, maritime regulations, and maintenance practices, combining online coursework, virtual mentoring and monthly practical sessions.
Training is scheduled to begin in May, with a formal launch set for May 6 at LASWA’s headquarters in Ikoyi, Lagos. The event will include presentations on programme structure, introduction of mentors and participants, and a stakeholder engagement session.
Authorities says the initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Lagos State government to improve safety on its waterways and build a more professional, globally competitive ferry transport system.
