The Lagos State Waterways Authority said it has intensified safety inspections across major ferry terminals in Lagos, seizing 120 damaged life jackets and warning operators to comply strictly with waterways safety regulations.
The agency said the enforcement campaign covered terminals and jetties at Ipakodo, Bayeku, Ijede, Ebute-Ero, Liverpool, Sabokoji, Alex and Coconut, with inspectors focusing on vessel seaworthiness and compliance with life jacket safety standards.
LASWA said the damaged life jackets were immediately removed from circulation to prevent risks to passengers and improve safety standards on Lagos waterways.
The authority said inspections revealed mixed levels of compliance among ferry operators. While some vessels met required safety standards, others were found to need repairs before achieving full seaworthiness.

LASWA said enforcement of safety protocols, particularly those relating to vessel conditions and the use of certified life jackets, remained “non-negotiable”.
The agency added that enforcement operations would continue across all ferry terminals to ensure operators comply fully with safety regulations.
Operators are legally required to maintain seaworthy vessels and provide passengers with functional and certified life jackets, the authority said.
LASWA reiterated its commitment to building a safer, more reliable and better regulated waterways transportation system in Lagos State.
For inquiries, the agency directed the public to its official helpline and social media platforms.
