Lagos waterways transport initiative requires technical assessments, engineering designs and procurement before major construction begins, project management says.

The management of the Omi Eko Project has rejected reports that no physical infrastructure has been delivered seven months after the initiative was launched, saying preparatory work is underway ahead of major construction.
In a statement, Dr. Segun Alabi, Head of Communications and Media for the project, described the report as misleading, arguing that the absence of visible structures does not necessarily indicate a lack of progress.
The project, designed to modernise Lagos State’s waterways transportation system, aims to provide a safer, more efficient and environmentally sustainable transport network for residents.
Alabi said major infrastructure projects typically require extensive technical assessments, detailed engineering designs, procurement procedures and consultations with stakeholders before construction can begin.
He said the Omi Eko Project was following a phased implementation process covering planning and procurement, design, infrastructure development, implementation and evaluation.
“These preparatory stages are critical to ensuring that the project is technically sound, financially responsible, environmentally sustainable, and capable of delivering its intended benefits,” Alabi said.
The project management urged journalists and members of the public to verify information through official channels, warning that reports based on the absence of visible construction could misrepresent the project’s implementation process.
It reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and the successful delivery of the initiative, but did not provide specific details of work completed so far, the amount spent or a timeline for the commencement of major construction.
