NAFDAC Clarifies Dairy Product Standards Following Media Report

1 Mins read

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has responded to a recent article published by Premium Times, titled “Investigation: Milk or Mimic: Nigeria’s Dairy Market, a Hub for Inferior EU Products.” In a statement, NAFDAC emphasized that the Milk and Dairy Products Regulations, 2021, clearly define and recognize various milk products, including whole milk powder, skimmed milk powder, and filled milk—a blend of skimmed milk and vegetable fat.

NAFDAC cited the Codex Alimentarius Commission, an international body that sets food standards, which recognizes and regulates filled milk under its standards. “NAFDAC assures the public that all dairy products registered for use in Nigeria undergo thorough regulatory diligence to safeguard public health,” said Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, Director-General of NAFDAC.

The agency reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and quality of food products in Nigeria, vowing to continue regulating with the public’s best interest at heart.
