Major General Godwin Mutkut Assumes Command of MNJTF, Promises to Tackle Evolving Security Challenges

Major General Godwin Mutkut officially took command as the Force Commander (FC) of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) during a handover ceremony at the MNJTF Headquarters in Farcha, N’Djamena, Chad on Thursday, 23 January 2025. He succeeded Major General Ibrahim Sallau Ali, whose tenure was marked by significant strides in enhancing regional security and counterterrorism efforts across the Lake Chad Basin.

In his inaugural address, Major General Mutkut expressed gratitude to the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) and member states for entrusting him with this critical responsibility. He pledged to build on the successes of his predecessors while adapting to emerging security challenges in the region.

“I am honoured to take on this responsibility and committed to working closely with all stakeholders to consolidate our gains and address the evolving security challenges in the Lake Chad Basin,” he stated.

Major General Ibrahim Sallau Ali, in his valedictory remarks, congratulated his successor and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the MNJTF effectively. He praised Major General Mutkut’s wealth of operational experience, having served as the Commander of Sector 3 MNJTF, General Officer Commanding 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, and Force Commander of Operation HADARIN DAJI.

“I am confident that Major General Mutkut, with his deep understanding of the security dynamics in the Chad Basin region, will build on the progress we have made and bring his best to the fight against terrorism,” Major General Ali said.

Known for his extensive operational expertise and exceptional leadership, Major General Mutkut brings decades of experience to his new role. As the former commander of the 8 Division Nigerian Army, he gained a reputation for relentlessly targeting terrorists and bandits in Northwest Nigeria.

His appointment reflects the commitment of MNJTF member states to providing capable leadership in addressing the complex and evolving security threats in the Lake Chad region.

The Multinational Joint Task Force continues to be a vital component in the fight against terrorism and the promotion of peace and stability in the region. Major General Mutkut’s leadership is expected to further strengthen its mission.
