The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on security agencies to replicate the successful security measures deployed during the last Ondo State governorship election for the upcoming Anambra State Governorship poll, scheduled for November 8, 2025.
Speaking at the first quarterly meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) for 2025, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, emphasized the crucial role of security agencies in ensuring a peaceful and credible electoral process. He noted that the Ondo election set a benchmark due to its well-coordinated deployment of security and electoral officials, contributing to the early commencement and smooth conduct of the poll, even in difficult terrains.
“We must replicate the happy experience of Ondo State in the forthcoming elections. We cannot lower the standards. We should continue to give Nigerians a happy experience on Election Day and beyond,” Prof. Yakubu stated.
He highlighted that Anambra’s election will take place in 5,720 polling units across 21 local government areas and stressed the importance of synergy among stakeholders to ensure efficiency.
Beyond Anambra, INEC is also preparing for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election on February 21, 2026, alongside multiple bye-elections. The commission assured security agencies that detailed operational guidelines, including terrain analysis and security assessments, would be provided to aid planning and deployment.
Prof. Yakubu also reiterated the need for sustained efforts against vote-buying, describing it as a persistent threat to credible elections. He acknowledged the proactive role of law enforcement and anti-graft agencies, citing successful prosecutions in three states.
On security preparations, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, represented by Hassan Yahaya Abdullahi of the Office of the NSA, affirmed that lessons from the Edo and Ondo elections would help refine strategies for Anambra. He pointed to the use of advanced security technology, such as drones and enhanced communication systems, as key factors in ensuring smooth polls.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, represented by Commissioner of Police Abayomi Sogunle, reaffirmed the Nigerian Police Force’s commitment to securing elections nationwide. He stressed the need for continued collaboration with other security agencies to uphold electoral integrity.
