The Golden-20 Association of Awgbu, in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, has donated two blocks of eight-room lodges to accommodate National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members posted to schools in the community.
Each lodge, comprising four rooms, was built at the Community Secondary School and Community High School, Awgbu, to provide suitable living conditions for corps members teaching in the area.
In addition to the lodges, the association drilled a borehole, built modern toilet facilities, and renovated a five-classroom block at Awgbu Grammar School.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the President of the association, Chief Oliver Okoli, also announced the award of 10 university scholarships valued between ₦800,000 and ₦1 million each to students for the 2024 academic year.
“We are committed to investing in the future of Awgbu by supporting both the corps members who teach our children and the students themselves,” Okoli said.
He also celebrated 10 beneficiaries who successfully graduated under the association’s 2019 scholarship scheme.
Commending the Golden-20 Association, Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, praised the group’s commitment to educational development.
“Supporting corps members who bridge the teaching gap is vital,” Chuma-Udeh said. “The state recently recruited 8,115 teachers and upgraded 21 schools to smart school status. We hope to establish one here in Awgbu as well.”
Chairman of Orumba North LGA, Capt. Casmir Nwafor (rtd.), announced plans to build additional corps lodges across the local government.
He urged, “Community leaders must prioritize the safety and security of corps members serving in their domains.”
NYSC Anambra State Coordinator, Mrs. Pauline Ojisua, described the association’s gesture as “timely and commendable.”
“These facilities will be fully utilized, and they will allow more corps members to be posted here,” Ojisua assured, while urging corps members to remain disciplined and grateful.
Principal of Community Secondary School, Rev. Sr. Mary Nwafor, appealed to the government for the establishment of a smart school in Awgbu.
Corps member Mrs. Eucharia Nwobere and scholarship recipient Ms. Chisom Igbo, speaking on behalf of beneficiaries, expressed gratitude and pledged to excel and contribute back to the community.
The event concluded with the presentation of scholarship cheques to the new recipients, reinforcing the Golden-20 Association’s commitment to unity and human capital development in Awgbu.
