Orumba South Begins Drain Desilting to Curb Flooding, Erosion

The Orumba South Local Government Council of Anambra State has begun clearing and desilting drainage channels across various communities to tackle erosion and flooding ahead of the peak rainy season.

Chairman of the council, Hon. Shedrack Azubuike, disclosed this during a press briefing, noting that the exercise would not only ease the flow of stormwater but also improve public health and the aesthetics of the environment.

“This exercise is in line with Gov. Chukwuma Soludo’s ‘Operation Clean, Green, and Sustainable Anambra’, aimed at ensuring that communities are neat, safe and habitable for all,” Azubuike said.

He emphasized that the desilting will cover all parts of Orumba South, as part of efforts to reduce the spread of waterborne diseases and prevent disasters associated with blocked drains.

“Clearing these drains will help prevent avoidable flooding that could result in the loss of lives and property. Our goal is to make Orumba South a model of cleanliness in Anambra State,” he stated.

Azubuike also urged residents to stop dumping refuse in drainage channels, warning that such actions contribute significantly to blockages and the risk of flooding.

“Regular maintenance of the drainage systems is essential to tackling both environmental and public health issues caused by blocked drains,” he added.

The council boss called on the public to embrace a cleaner lifestyle and support the government’s efforts in sustaining a healthy and flood-free environment.
