LAGOS, March 30, 2024 – Eight inmates at the Ikoyi Correctional Center in Lagos have regained their freedom after renowned author, banker, and pastor Bayo Adeyinka paid their fines as part of his prison outreach initiative to mark his 50th birthday.
At a ceremony held at the facility’s Catholic chapel on Saturday, Adeyinka, popularly known as “Greater Bayo” online, told a gathering of inmates, correctional officers, family, and friends that his initiative was inspired by biblical teachings on freedom.
“According to the Bible, every 50th year is known as the ‘Year of Jubilee,’ which means freedom,” Adeyinka said. “It is therefore my honor to be able to facilitate the freedom of eight of our brothers here today through the payment of fines in commemoration of my 50th birthday.”
The initiative was funded through proceeds from the recent launch of his two books, as well as donations from his birthday celebration.
Beyond securing their release, Adeyinka also donated essential medical supplies—including antibiotics, anti-malarial drugs, painkillers, blood boosters, and syringes—to the prison’s clinic. In addition, he provided sanitary pads for 268 female inmates at the Kirikiri Female Correctional Centre, ensuring they had supplies for the rest of the year.
Correctional officers and inmates expressed deep appreciation for the gesture. Before leaving, Adeyinka encouraged the freed individuals to turn a new leaf and “pay the kindness forward.” He also handed each of them ₦20,000 for transportation back home.
