In a tragic attack late Sunday night, assailants targeted a military base on Barkaram Island in the Lac Province of Chad, resulting in the death of approximately forty soldiers, according to a statement from the Presidency of the Republic. The assault on the base, located west of Ngouboua in the Kaya department, has shocked the nation and prompted immediate action from President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno.

Early Monday morning, President Deby, who is also the Head of State and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, arrived at the scene to assess the aftermath firsthand. He paid tribute to the fallen soldiers and extended his condolences to their families, while also offering words of encouragement to those wounded in the attack and the soldiers stationed there.

As a decisive response, President Deby ordered the launch of Operation “HASKANITE,” a mission aimed at tracking down the perpetrators. “As the guarantor of the country’s security, I am unwavering in my commitment to defend our nation and ensure the safety of all citizens,” he stated, addressing both the troops and the residents of the region.

The President assured the public that the government will take every necessary measure to secure the area and prevent further incidents, reinforcing his support for the Defense and Security Forces as they pursue the attackers to their “last entrenchments.”
