The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has refuted claims circulating in some media outlets about the appointment of an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS). In a statement released, the DHQ clarified that no such appointment has been made, countering the speculation.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, is currently on his scheduled annual leave for 2024, enjoying a well-deserved rest. During his absence, Major General Abdulsalam Bagudu Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans, has been handling routine military briefings. These briefings are part of standard military protocol and ensure smooth operations in the Armed Forces.

DHQ urged the public to disregard the misinformation and warned individuals spreading such rumors to desist immediately. “The COAS is hale and hearty and will soon resume normal duties,” the statement emphasized, adding that the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) had spoken with Lt. Gen. Lagbaja recently.

Additionally, the DHQ addressed a viral video advocating for a military takeover, labeling such suggestions as treasonous. The military reaffirmed its loyalty to the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and its unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s democracy. It cautioned that any individual or group pushing for unconstitutional changes would face the full consequences of the law.

The DHQ praised the public for their continued support and prayers, attributing the relative peace in the country to the leadership of the Armed Forces and the President’s backing. “Victory is assured,” the statement concluded, reiterating the military’s focus on safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity and promoting national stability.
