An interactive HIV awareness app, A l’Assaut du Sida (AADS), meaning “Tackling AIDS,” has surged in popularity during the African Cup of Nations (CAN) football tournament, engaging nearly 200,000 adolescents and young people. The app was developed by Côte d’Ivoire-based web designer José Fardon and his team at SYL, with support from UNAIDS, UNICEF, and the Global Fund.

“We had launched various versions of the game in the past, but this required a different look and feel to gel with the sporting event,” said Fardon. The app features a quiz-like game designed to educate users on HIV prevention and awareness.

Promoted by 20,000 volunteers during the tournament, the app saw wide reach through QR code sharing among football fans. Côte d’Ivoire’s National AIDS Programme (PNLS) also endorsed the initiative. “The online app appealed to us because we knew it would reach the target audience and make an impact,” said PNLS Coordinating Director Eboi Ehui.

Since its launch in mid-January 2024, the app has been downloaded by thousands, with plans for further expansion. Côte d’Ivoire’s Minister of Health, Pierre Dimba, praised the initiative: “This fun and educational online game is a response to young people’s need for accurate information via social media.”

Fardon and his partners now aim to roll out the app across West and Central Africa, positioning the game as a key tool in regional HIV prevention efforts.
