Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reiterated his administration’s dedication to leveraging the state’s waterways for tourism and expanding the transportation system to boost economic growth.
Speaking at the 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta at the weekend, held across the five divisions of the state – Victoria Island, Ikorodu, Badagry, Ikeja, Lagos Island, and Epe, the governor described the event as a showcase of Lagos’ rich cultural heritage and tourism potential.
“We are indeed excited that we can finally have a boat regatta, the beginning of what will be a lot of activities during this yuletide season,” Sanwo-Olu said during the event themed “Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life.” “One-third of Lagos is surrounded by water. We need to use our waterways not only for transportation but also as a strong ecosystem for tourism.”

The governor, accompanied by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and members of the State Executive Council, enjoyed a boat ride and urged residents to embrace the serene beauty and cultural significance of Lagos’ waterways.
“Today, you will witness displays of water infrastructure and boat regattas from our five divisions. It’s a day of sheer tourism and understanding the beauty of Lagos’ waterways. Let us relax and enjoy the hospitality of Lagos,” Sanwo-Olu added.
The Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, emphasized the regatta’s role in driving economic growth and creating opportunities for local businesses.

“This year’s theme underscores the integral role our waterways play in shaping our history and identity as Lagosians,” Benson-Awoyinka said. “Through the dazzling display of decorated boats, exhilarating traditional races, and captivating water sports, we celebrate the boundless creativity and dynamism of our people.”
She commended the governor’s visionary leadership, highlighting his administration’s commitment to promoting sustainability and tourism infrastructure.
“Governor Sanwo-Olu’s efforts align perfectly with the essence of this occasion, ensuring Lagos remains a premier global destination,” she noted.
