Lagos Partners Staff Development Centre to Boost Capacity in Tertiary Institutions

The Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education has launched a partnership between the Public Service Staff Development Centre (PSSDC) and state-owned tertiary institutions aimed at strengthening human capacity and aligning training with the state government’s policy priorities.

The collaboration, unveiled during a strategic meeting in Alausa on Thursday, will introduce a tailored curriculum designed to equip academic and non-academic staff with skills needed to support the state’s governance agenda.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Adeniran Kasali, said sustained investment in staff development was essential for improving public service delivery across the tertiary education system.

“Consistency in building the capacity of our public officials is non-negotiable,” Kasali said. “Our goal is to ensure that our staff’s ability to deliver results is firmly rooted in government policy and the current administration’s strategic vision.”

According to him, the partnership will align institutional training programmes with the Lagos State government’s THEMES+ development agenda while providing staff with practical competencies relevant to their roles.

Kasali also urged state-owned institutions to take advantage of the PSSDC as a hub for public service training and professional development.

Director-General of the PSSDC, Adekunmilola Adio-Moses, said the centre’s programmes were designed to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical governance.

He noted that the training modules differ from conventional academic programmes because they are built around the operational realities of Lagos State’s public service.

“The PSSDC understands the inner workings of Lagos State. We are uniquely positioned to combine core public service values with practical policy execution,” he said.

Adio-Moses added that the centre has expanded its programmes for tertiary institution staff to include postgraduate diplomas, professional certificates and specialised training in academic leadership, university governance, data management, and monitoring and evaluation.

Management representatives from the state’s major tertiary institutions welcomed the initiative and called for closer collaboration.

Deputy Vice-Chancellors Professor Akanji Bankole of Lagos State University, Professor Abiodun Denloye of Lagos State University of Science and Technology, and Professor Daoudu of Lagos State University of Education said stronger institutional cooperation would enable staff to benefit more fully from the centre’s expertise.

They also recommended regular strategic meetings to ensure sustained alignment in capacity-building efforts across the institutions.

The meeting was attended by representatives of vice-chancellors, provosts of the Lagos State College of Nursing and the Lagos State College of Health Technology, the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Scholarship Board, the Acting Director of the Lagos State Library Board, the Director of the Agency for Mass Education, and senior officials from the ministry and the PSSDC.
