Nigeria Launches Climate Education Manual to Boost Awareness in Schools

Over 100 students, teachers, and stakeholders gathered at SASCON International School, Abuja, to unveil a Co-Created Climate Education Manual, aimed at enhancing climate literacy among Nigerian secondary school students.

The manual, spearheaded by Professor Chukwumerije Okereke with funding from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, is designed to equip students with essential knowledge and practical tools to address climate change.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Iniobong Abiola-Awe, Director of the Department of Climate Change (DCC), Federal Ministry of Environment, described the initiative as a crucial step in empowering young Nigerians to take climate action.

“Today, as we launch this manual, I encourage everyone to adopt its use. We learn every day, and every opportunity matters. Together, we will make a meaningful difference—not just for this generation, but for generations to come,” she said.

Similarly, Dr. Mrs. Bukola Obateru, representing the Director General of the Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation, FCTA, commended the contributors, emphasizing that climate education is a collective responsibility.

“Through education and awareness, we can build a sustainable future for ourselves and future generations,” she stated.

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) also expressed its support for the initiative. Represented by Miss Peace Gobo, NOA reaffirmed its commitment to raising climate awareness.

“As part of our mandate, we have developed a National Climate Charter and established a new department dedicated to environmental sustainability,” she noted.

Sir Richard Inyamkume, Registrar General of the Institute for Climate Smart Research and Policy Advocacy, described the manual as a “tool of hope and change” that will empower students and educators to take informed action.

“This initiative is a pivotal step in our journey toward a sustainable future. With the knowledge provided in this manual, we will pave the way for informed climate action,” he stated.

In his address, Professor Okereke highlighted the manual’s development process and emphasized the need for effective implementation. He also expressed gratitude to all contributors, including Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, First Lady of Enugu State, for her endorsement and foreword.

Several environmental advocates, including representatives from Clean-Tech Hub, ActionAid Nigeria, Solar Sister Nigeria, and Eco-Friendly Sensitization and Advocacy, described the manual as a timely resource for advancing Nigeria’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
