The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has issued a safety alert to boat operators and fishermen regarding a sunken dredger located near Eko Bridge, close to the Ebute Ero jetty in Lagos.

According to a statement released to newsmen on Thursday, the incident, which occurred on Saturday, March 29, poses a serious threat to navigational safety and environmental stability in the area.

“This is a potential threat to navigational safety and environmental stability,” NIWA said. “The incident poses a hazard to river crafts navigating the area, especially during low tide or poor visibility conditions.”

The agency advised all waterway users, particularly fishermen and commercial boat operators, to exercise extreme caution when approaching the affected location.

“Warning signs and markers are being installed in collaboration with NIWA and marine safety officials,” the statement continued. “Until proper removal or mitigation steps are taken, avoiding the vicinity is strongly advised.”

NIWA emphasized the need for public cooperation to prevent accidents and ensure safety.

“While we count on your unwavering co-operation and collaboration in this regard, please accept the assurances of our highest regards and commitment in restoring navigational safety in this vicinity promptly,” the statement concluded.

Efforts are underway to address the obstruction and restore safe passage along the affected waterway.
