The Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, and the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mohamed Buba Marwa, have pledged to reinforce collaboration between the state government and the NDLEA to combat the growing menace of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking in Plateau State.

During a courtesy visit by Governor Mutfwang to the NDLEA’s National Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, August 15, 2024, both leaders expressed their commitment to the renewed partnership. Marwa praised the governor for his dedication to maintaining peace and security in Plateau State, noting the significant drug seizures and arrests made in the region.

“A total of 6,975.6 kilograms of illicit drugs, including Cocaine, Heroin, Methamphetamine, Cannabis, and Opioids, were seized in the state over the last two years, leading to the arrest of 1,720 suspects and the conviction of 156 individuals,” Marwa revealed. He further called on the governor to support the establishment of a standard rehabilitation center and to adopt drug testing policies in schools and communities.

Governor Mutfwang, in his remarks, commended Marwa’s leadership, stating, “We’ve followed keenly your performance and we can say that since your coming on board, NDLEA has gone about its functions with more vigor and determination. Those profiting from the illicit drug trade have not had it easy.”

He emphasized the importance of tackling both the demand and supply sides of the drug issue, stating, “On our part as a state, we are willing to collaborate more with you to reduce this menace to the barest minimum. We want to continue sharing information and intelligence to enhance our cooperation.”
