Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited (SEEPCO) has reaffirmed its strong commitment to workplace safety, employee wellbeing, and innovation as it marked the 22nd World Day for Safety and Health at Work, established by the International Labour Organization (ILO).

In a statement issued on Monday in Lagos, Aveek Biswas, Head of Corporate Communications at SEEPCO, said the company commemorated the occasion with a week-long series of activities under the theme *”Revolutionizing Health and Safety: The Role of AI and Digitalization at Work.”*

The celebrations, which concluded on April 26 ahead of the global observance date of April 28, featured employee activities across operational locations. These included a health walk, a lecture on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in workplace safety, leadership demonstrations, safety engagement sessions, and health awareness talks focused on site-specific challenges.

“Safety is not just a priority; it is our value,” Biswas said at the closing ceremony. “We are embracing innovation and digitalization to revolutionize our approach to health and safety. Our commitment is unwavering—to protect lives, enhance wellbeing, and build a resilient workforce for the future.”

Throughout 2024, SEEPCO’s Health, Safety, Environment, and Fire (HSEF) teams conducted impactful campaigns on construction safety, fire drills, confined space protocols, seasonal campaigns against lightning strikes, and alcohol testing to prevent workplace accidents.

Highlighting its forward-looking strategy, SEEPCO announced plans to roll out technology-driven initiatives such as a real-time digital incident reporting system, a digital Unsafe Act and Unsafe Condition (UAUC) reporting tool, and a streamlined e-Permit to Work (PTW) system. These platforms, driven by advanced HSEF data analytics and predictive monitoring, are designed to enhance transparency, compliance, and proactive risk management.

“These initiatives are not just about automation; they are about empowerment—giving every employee the tools to make better decisions, prevent harm, and continuously improve,” Biswas added.

The company also advanced professional development by offering specialized safety training through internationally accredited agencies. Notably, employees were certified as Radiation Safety Officers (RSOs) after a National Training Course at the University of Ibadan’s National Institute of Radiation Protection and Research.

Further underscoring its environmental responsibility, SEEPCO organized Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Management Awareness Training for around 50 employees to build internal capacity for effective GHG management and compliance with evolving environmental regulations.

In collaboration with the Lagos State Fire Service, SEEPCO also staged a joint emergency drill to strengthen inter-agency coordination and enhance readiness for critical situations.

Since its establishment in 2003, SEEPCO has woven safety into the fabric of its operations across Nigeria. The company is recognized as one of the few from Nigeria’s 2005 licensing round to achieve first oil within two years, operating successfully in challenging terrains.
