The Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Police has responded to a video that went viral involving some of it’s officers.
In response to the video depicting alleged assault and extortion, the State Police Command has taken decisive action against the officers involved.
The incident involved the assault and extortion of a 24-year-old lady, Soyemi Funmilola, at a checkpoint near Tai Solarin University of Education in Ijagun junction.
The victim reported the incident to the police on January 13, 2024, leading to a thorough investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department. The investigation confirmed the officers’ misconduct, including tracing the account where the extorted funds were deposited. The money has been recovered and marked as exhibits.
According to Omolola Odutola, the Command’s image maker, the Inspector, Rank and File involved have been detained for an orderly room trial.
The officer has also been issued an official query as directed by the State Commissioner of Police, with the Provost department overseeing the disciplinary proceedings.
Emphasising a zero-tolerance policy for misconduct, Odutola stated that the State Police Command is committed to upholding ethical standards.
Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Abiodun Alamutu reiterated the importance of respecting citizens’ fundamental human rights and emphasised this during seminars for officers. Any officer found infringing on public rights will face sanctions, he said.
The family of the complainant has been contacted, and communication is ongoing with the Commissioner of Police, who assured them that the officers will be held accountable for failing to adhere to the force’s rules and regulations. The Ogun State Police Command is dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of residents and their properties.
“The outcome of the orderly room proceedings will be made public as soon as the investigation is concluded,” added Odutola, reiterating the Command’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining a transparent, respectful relationship, as outlined in the Police Rules and Regulations.
