The Nigerian Army has responded to the tragedy during which military personnel on a peace mission to Okuama community in Bomadi Local Government Area, Delta State, were ambushed and killed on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

The incident unfolded as troops from the 181 Amphibious Battalion responded to a distress call stemming from a communal crisis between Okuama and Okoloba communities within Delta State. According to reports, the troops were surrounded by local youths upon arrival, resulting in a fatal confrontation.

The reinforcement team, led by the commanding officer, also fell victim to the attack. The casualties included the commanding officer, two majors, one captain, and twelve soldiers.

In response to the atrocity, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), has ordered an immediate investigation and the apprehension of those responsible. The Delta State Government has been informed of the incident.

Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Acting Director of Defence Information, assured the public of the military’s unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and security in the nation. While some arrests have been made, efforts to determine the motive behind the attack are ongoing.

Further updates on the situation are expected to be provided in due course.
