African Health Ministers to Convene in Brazzaville for WHO’s 74th Regional Committee Session

Health ministers from 47 African countries will gather in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, from August 26-30, 2024, for the Seventy-fourth session of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Regional Committee for Africa. This annual meeting is pivotal for shaping health policies and strategies across the continent.

During the session, delegates will discuss various health challenges and opportunities. Notably, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, emphasized the importance of the event, saying, “This gathering is critical for our collective efforts to strengthen health systems and improve well-being across the African region.”

Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa, highlighted the significance of the event in tackling ongoing public health issues. She remarked, “The Transformation Agenda has driven remarkable health advancements in the past decade. Our goal is to build on these successes and address the persistent challenges that affect the health of millions of Africans.”

The event will also feature several key side-events, including a focus on cervical cancer prevention, child mortality, and the ongoing fight to eradicate polio in Africa. 

The session is expected to draw about 500 delegates, including senior health ministry officials, representatives from United Nations agencies, civil society, and development partners.
