Lagos State Task Force Cracks Down on Roadside Vendors and Shanties Along Mile 2 – Oke

1 Mins read

In a decisive move to address the growing challenges posed by roadside vendors and the proliferation of shanties, the Lagos State Task Force has launched a major operation along the Mile 2 – Oke section of the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.

The operation comes in response to increasing illegal activities that have plagued the area, leading to severe traffic congestion, rising traffic-related robberies, and overall environmental degradation. CSP Adetayo Akerele highlighted the critical nature of the situation, stating, “The spread of shanties has not only affected the free flow of traffic on this route but has also become a breeding ground for criminal activities, putting the lives and properties of motorists and commuters at risk.”

The Task Force, acting under directives from the State Government and the Lagos Commissioner of Police, CP Adegoke Fayoade, dismantled illegal structures and cleared roadside vendors from the area. Among the most pressing concerns addressed was the illegal sale of petroleum products by the roadside. “Over 2000 litres of petroleum products were seized during the operation. This highly dangerous practice poses a significant risk of fire hazards and explosions. We will ensure that such activities, which endanger the lives of these illegal merchants and other road users, are brought to a complete halt,” CSP Akerele declared.

CSP Akerele further assured that the Task Force remains committed to the safety and well-being of all residents. “This operation is a testament to our commitment. The Agency will continue to monitor the area to prevent the resurgence of illegal activities and to ensure that the roads remain clear for safe and smooth transportation,” he emphasized.

During the raid, four suspects were arrested, and several items were confiscated. The arrested suspects will be charged in court, and the confiscated items will be forfeited to the State Government. CSP Akerele urged residents and business owners in the Mile 2 area to cooperate with authorities and adhere to the Environmental Laws of Lagos State to maintain the safety and serenity achieved by this operation.
