U.S. and Nigeria to Host AI Conference in Lagos, Focused on Global Inclusivity

1 Mins read

The U.S. Department of State and Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy will bring together over 200 stakeholders for the “Global Inclusivity and AI: Africa” conference in Lagos on September 10-11, 2024. The event will gather senior officials from the U.S. and Africa, along with private sector executives, civil society representatives, and academics, to discuss the responsible development and use of artificial intelligence (AI).

The conference aims to harmonize AI governance strategies between the U.S. and African nations, ensuring safe, secure, and transparent AI deployments across the continent. This initiative builds on the momentum from the U.S. Secretary of State’s trip to several African countries earlier this year and the UN’s adoption of a resolution promoting trustworthy AI systems for sustainable development.

Leading the U.S. delegation will be Dr. Seth Center, Acting Special Envoy for Critical and Emerging Technology, and Joy Basu, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs. The conference will also feature recorded remarks from Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell
