Troops Intensify Crackdown on Oil Thieves in Niger Delta, Recover Massive Stolen Products

In a decisive effort to combat illegal oil bunkering and economic sabotage, troops of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, in collaboration with other security agencies, have ramped up anti-illegal oil bunkering operations across the Niger Delta region. The week-long operations from November 11 to 17, 2024, achieved remarkable results, including the deactivation of 46 illegal refining sites, interception of 47 boats, recovery of over 95,000 litres of stolen products, and the arrest of 28 suspected oil thieves.

In Rivers State, troops acting on credible intelligence targeted economic saboteurs along the Oando pipeline in ONELGA. Armed vandals engaged the soldiers but were overpowered and fled, leaving behind an AK-47 rifle, a loaded magazine, and 17 rounds of ammunition. Subsequent operations in Obiafu-Ndoni led to the interception of 472 sacks of stolen crude, arresting seven suspects, and recovering over 28,320 litres of crude.

In Bayelsa State, operations in areas such as Tunu, Clough Creeks, and Nembe LGA led to the deactivation of multiple illegal refining sites and confiscation of over 12,500 litres of stolen products. Additionally, troops recovered 600 vandalized pipes from Shell Petroleum Development Company at Tamogbene Creek.

In Delta State, troops intercepted a Sienna vehicle loaded with 28 cellophane bags of stolen products in Isoko South LGA, while a pipeline breach in Ughelli North LGA was identified and reported. In Akwa Ibom, soldiers seized 2,160 litres of stolen products and arrested five suspects.

Major General Jamal Abdussalam, General Officer Commanding, 6 Division, reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to safeguarding national assets. “These operations are critical in dismantling criminal cartels and ensuring increased oil output. We remain resolute in securing the Niger Delta from economic saboteurs,” he stated.
