Enugu State has taken a bold step in the fight against climate change with the launch of a comprehensive Climate Policy and Action Plan, aimed at fostering environmental sustainability and mitigating climate risks.
The unveiling ceremony, held in Enugu on Monday, introduced three key initiatives: the Enugu State Climate Policy, Climate Action Plan, and Climate Education Manual for Schools. These initiatives seek to integrate climate action across multiple sectors while raising awareness, particularly among young people, about environmental conservation.
Governor Peter Mbah, represented by his Deputy, Ifeanyi Ossai, reaffirmed the administration’s determination to tackle climate challenges head-on.
“Climate change is real, and we must take decisive action. This initiative will ensure that we build a sustainable future while upholding environmental best practices,” Mbah stated.
He highlighted the importance of the Climate Education Manual, which aims to equip students with knowledge about climate change and encourage responsible environmental practices.
Governor Mbah also stressed the need for a shift from deforestation to forestation, revealing plans to introduce new laws to curb illegal logging.
“The state government, in collaboration with lawmakers, will enact laws prohibiting illegal logging while promoting afforestation initiatives to combat climate change,” he added.
Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Prof. Sam Ugwu, described the launch as a “landmark achievement” that positions Enugu for a climate-resilient future.
“Climate change affects every aspect of life, from livelihoods to ecosystems. This new policy provides a clear roadmap for integrating sustainability across all sectors, attracting green investments, creating jobs, and positioning Enugu as a leader in Nigeria’s low-carbon transition,” Ugwu said.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Policy and Sustainable Development, Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke, emphasized the need for Climate-Smart Agriculture to enhance productivity while minimizing environmental impact.
“Agriculture is a key sector in Enugu, and by promoting climate-smart practices, we can enhance productivity while reducing environmental impact,” he noted.
To drive implementation, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, announced the formation of a climate action implementation committee to oversee the execution of policies.
UNICEF Enugu Chief Field Officer, Mrs. Juliet Chiluwe, commended the state’s commitment to climate governance, particularly its Smart Green School Initiative.
“Children must be protected from the long-term consequences of climate change. UNICEF remains committed to supporting Enugu State in ensuring the social protection of children’s rights in the face of environmental challenges,” Chiluwe stated.
With this ambitious Climate Policy and Action Plan, Enugu State is setting a precedent for climate governance in Nigeria. The government’s commitment to education, legislation, and green investments signals a strategic shift towards a more sustainable and resilient future.
