The Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) has expressed deep joy and gratitude following the election of Pope Leo XIV, hailing his emergence as a “providential gift” to the universal Church and a beacon of hope for the African continent.
In a statement issued by Fridolin Cardinal Ambongo, Archbishop of Kinshasa and President of SECAM, the bishops of Africa and Madagascar welcomed the new pontiff with open arms, describing his election as “a new chapter in the life of the Church, a season of hope, renewal, and missionary commitment.”
“As a continent blessed with a rapidly growing Catholic population and a youthful, vibrant Church, Africa looks with great expectation to the pontificate of Pope Leo XIV,” Cardinal Ambongo said. “We pray that his leadership will inspire efforts to deepen the faith, strengthen vocations, and advance authentic, Christ-centered development.”
The bishops highlighted Africa’s increasing relevance within the global Church, noting the continent’s rich culture, deep-rooted spirituality, and its pivotal role in promoting the values of justice, peace, and dignity for all. They voiced confidence that Pope Leo XIV’s pastoral leadership would further empower Africa’s youth and support the Church’s work in tackling systemic challenges.
“We trust that Pope Leo XIV’s pastoral wisdom and evangelical zeal will reinforce the Church’s commitment to justice, peace, and the dignity of all people, particularly the poor, the marginalized, and those suffering the consequences of conflict, inequality, and neglect,” the statement read.
Reaffirming their communion with the new Pope, SECAM pledged to work closely with him in addressing the continent’s most urgent issues, including poverty, education, healthcare, interreligious dialogue, and environmental protection.
“We believe his leadership will unlock Africa’s full potential, empowering our youth to become agents of positive change, inspired by the Gospel,” Cardinal Ambongo added.
Concluding with a note of prayerful solidarity, SECAM invoked the intercession of Mary, Mother of the Church and Patroness of Africa, as Pope Leo XIV begins his mission as the 267th Successor of Peter.
