Articulated Truck Accident at Maryland Independent Tunnel Causes Major Traffic Disruption

Late Tuesday night, an articulated truck carrying a 40ft industrial container used for dispensing fuel experienced brake failure and crashed into the road median at the Maryland Independent Tunnel inward Odo Iya Alaro, causing significant traffic disruption.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said it received distress calls at 11:38 PM through the 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency lines. In response, it activated its Tiger Response Team from the Command Control Centre in Alausa, Ikeja. The team arrived at the scene at 12:06 AM and found the truck, with unknown registration, had lost its cargo upon impact.

The LASEMA Response Team (LRT) coordinated the recovery operation, with road traffic control measures and diversions managed by the LASTMA Patrol Team. 

LASEMA reported that no injuries or casualties were recorded at the scene as safety measures were put in place to protect responders.

Meanwhile the articulated truck and flatbed have been towed to the LASTMA office in Oshodi.

LASEMA’s heavy-duty equipment, Charlie, has been deployed to remove the fallen 40-foot container from the road before dawn.

Despite the significant traffic delays caused by the accident, the swift response from emergency teams ensured no casualties and a rapid commencement of recovery efforts.
