A coalition of civil society organizations has applauded the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Afam Osigwe (SAN), for his presence at the Federal High Court in Abuja on January 29, 2025, during the arraignment of human rights activist Omoyele Sowore on alleged cybercrime charges.

In a statement signed by 16 organizations, including Media Rights Agenda (MRA), Paradigm Initiative (PIN), and the International Press Centre (IPC), the groups described Osigwe’s action as a “principled demonstration of support for the rule of law” and a bold step in promoting transparency in the judicial process.

“The symbolic yet courageous act of the NBA President underscores the critical role of legal professionals in safeguarding democratic principles and ensuring that justice prevails in our society,” the statement read.

The CSOs noted that Osigwe’s presence in court sent a “strong message about the importance of transparency, fairness, and accountability in the judicial process” while reinforcing public confidence in the judiciary.

While recognizing the NBA’s institutional commitment to upholding the rule of law, the coalition urged the association to institutionalize court observation through dedicated legal monitoring teams.

“We call on the NBA to play a proactive role in advocating for judicial reforms, ensuring the protection of human rights defenders, and challenging the weaponization of the Cybercrime Act against activists and journalists,” the statement added.

The groups further recommended that the NBA engage with civil society and other stakeholders to develop a framework for trial monitoring and continuous advocacy for judicial integrity.

“We stand ready to support the NBA in any way necessary to ensure the success of this initiative,” the statement concluded.
