International Organization for Migration (IOM) Director General Amy Pope visited Jordan emphasizing the organization’s efforts to support displaced Syrians and deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
During her visit, DG Pope met with key Jordanian officials, including Prince Rashid bin Hassan, Chairman of the Hashemite Charity Organization (JHCO), Minister of Interior Mazen Al-Faraya, and military representatives. She commended Jordan’s role in facilitating humanitarian efforts in the region.
“With vital and continued funding from the United States, IOM is able to work in close partnership with various stakeholders, including the Jordanian government and JHCO, to deliver life-saving assistance to those in urgent need in Gaza and to support displaced Syrians,” Pope said.
Her visit began at the Jaber-Nassib border crossing, where she and Minister Al-Faraya discussed border management and the safe return of Syrian refugees.
“Jordan has demonstrated long-standing solidarity by hosting large numbers of refugees,” Al-Faraya noted. “We remain committed to our humanitarian responsibilities, but stronger international support is essential to sustain these efforts.”
At the Border Security Directorate, DG Pope received a briefing on Jordan’s Civil-Military Coordination Center, which plays a crucial role in ensuring the timely delivery of aid through the Jordanian corridor. She also toured IOM’s warehouse, which houses nearly four million life-saving supplies, including tents, hygiene kits, and latrines, destined for Gaza.
In a meeting with Prince Rashid bin Hassan, DG Pope reaffirmed IOM’s commitment to working closely with JHCO to strengthen regional humanitarian operations.
IOM, active in Jordan since 1994, continues to provide essential support to migrants, refugees, and host communities. Since October 2023, the organization has leveraged its global emergency response expertise to deliver aid to displaced people in Gaza, drawing from experiences in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Ukraine.
