Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has called on residents of Lagos to prioritise safety and exercise caution during the Easter celebrations, citing increased risks linked to travel, public gatherings and fire hazards.
In a statement issued through the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the governor warned that while Easter is a period of reflection and social activity, it often comes with heightened dangers, particularly on major roads and in crowded spaces.
Motorists were urged to obey traffic regulations, avoid reckless driving and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on journeys.
Residents were also advised to remain vigilant in busy locations such as religious centres, parks and event venues, where large gatherings could increase the risk of accidents or emergencies.
The statement further emphasised the importance of fire safety, warning against improper use of cooking gas, electrical appliances and open flames such as candles, which are commonly used during the festive period.
Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency, in collaboration with other emergency responders, had activated a comprehensive safety and response strategy across the state.
This includes the deployment of personnel and equipment to strategic locations to ensure rapid intervention in cases ranging from road accidents to fire outbreaks and other emergencies, he said.
“All emergency responders are on high alert and fully prepared to handle any situation,” Oke-Osanyintolu added.
Residents were encouraged to promptly report emergencies through the state’s toll-free lines, 112 and 767, to enable swift response and minimise potential damage or loss of life.
Sanwo-Olu extended Easter greetings to Lagosians and reiterated his administration’s commitment to public safety, urging residents to celebrate responsibly to ensure a peaceful and incident-free holiday.
