The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has expressed deep concern over the recent surge in violence in Tripoli, warning of a looming humanitarian crisis and potential mass displacement. The organization also flagged the mobilization of armed groups in regions surrounding the Libyan capital as a serious threat to civilians.

In a statement issued Friday, IOM joined other United Nations agencies in calling for an immediate halt to hostilities to protect lives and uphold international humanitarian law.

“We are alarmed by the recent escalation of violence in Tripoli. There is a severe risk of mass displacement and danger to civilians,” the organization stated. “IOM joins other UN partners in calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of civilians.”

The agency welcomed emerging reports of a ceasefire and urged that it be “fully and unconditionally respected” to safeguard the rights and dignity of all those affected by the conflict.

IOM also confirmed that it continues to coordinate with humanitarian partners to ensure access to vulnerable groups, including migrants, who are often at heightened risk in conflict zones. The agency is actively monitoring potential displacement patterns and says it is prepared to respond as needed.

Libya has faced ongoing instability and armed conflict since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, with intermittent flare-ups of violence between rival factions, particularly in and around Tripoli.
