The 2026 International Horse Racing Derby has begun in Kano, drawing competitors from across Nigeria and several other countries to contest a series of races at one of the nation’s most prestigious equestrian events.

Speaking to journalists in Kano, the National Coordinator of the Horse Racing Federation of Nigeria, Alhaji Abubakar Mustapha Dangi, said the four-day competition opened on June 24 and will conclude on June 27 under the theme, “The International Horse Racing Derby: Renewed Hope Kano 2026.”

Dangi, who is also the Sarkin Dawaki of Kasar Nupe, described Kano as a historic hub of horse racing in Nigeria, noting the state’s long-standing contribution to the growth of the sport.

“No horse racing history in Nigeria can be complete without Kano. The state has a rich heritage in horse racing, particularly during the administration of the late Audu Bako, which greatly promoted the sport,” he said.

According to him, more than 20 races across different categories will be contested during the derby, with participants representing various parts of Nigeria as well as other countries.

He said this year’s edition marks the first time a modern starting gate is being used in horse racing competitions in Kano, bringing the event in line with international standards already adopted in Bida and Zaria.

Dangi expressed confidence that the introduction of the starting gate would enhance fairness, competitiveness and professionalism in the conduct of races.

Results from the opening day saw Abba, owned by S.D. Stable, win the Sarkin Karaye Cup and claim a cash prize of N400,000.

Layla, also owned by S.D. Stable, finished second to earn N300,000, while Aeesha, another horse from the stable, placed third and received N200,000.

In the Late Alhaji Hassan Naif Memorial Cup, Jan Wuya, owned by Ali Mada, secured first place and won N300,000.

Share Hawaye, owned by Horse Flavour Stable, emerged winner of the Late Malam Aminu Kano Cup and received N400,000.

Organisers said racing would continue throughout the week, with additional events and prize presentations scheduled ahead of the grand finale on Saturday.
