Electric erries and modern waterways infrastructure aim to cut transport emissions and promote sustainable urban mobility

The Lagos State Government has launched the Project Management, Operations and Design consultancy for its Omi Eko Project, advancing plans to modernise water transportation in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation Oluwaseun Osiyemi said the consultancy would provide technical leadership, operational guidance and project management expertise for the implementation of the project.

“The Omi Eko Project represents one of the most ambitious investments in inland waterways transportation in Africa,” Osiyemi said at a kick-off meeting in Lagos.

He said the project would combine modern infrastructure with electric ferry technology to improve connectivity, cut travel times, enhance passenger safety and reduce the environmental impact of transportation.

The consultancy will also coordinate stakeholders and support implementation of the project, which involves the Lagos State Government, development partners, contractors and host communities.

Osiyemi thanked the French Development Agency (AFD), the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Union for supporting the state’s sustainable urban mobility plans.

Dimitris Galanis, head of delegation and director of the international unit at Planet SA, which is part of the consultancy team, said the group would provide project management, operational planning and technical expertise in line with international standards.

“We look forward to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to deliver a safe, efficient and sustainable water transport system that will benefit millions of Lagos residents,” Galanis said.

The Omi Eko Project is designed to expand and modernise water transportation in Lagos through improved infrastructure, electric ferry services and upgraded operational systems as the state seeks alternatives to its heavily congested road network.

I can also make the headline more **business-focused, climate-focused or transport-focused**.
