Lagos State Government Launches Second Phase of Digital Capabilities Skills Programme for Tertiary Institutions

As part of the government’s broader effort to position young graduates for the demands of the modern workforce and to enhance their employability in a rapidly evolving job market, the Lagos state Government, through the Ministry of Tertiary Education, has announced the commencement of the second phase of its Digital Capabilities Skills Programme. The initiative is designed to equip students of state-owned tertiary institutions with essential digital skills,

The state’s Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hon. Tolani Sule, highlighted the significance of the initiative at a press briefing held in Lagos on Monday. He emphasized that the program is aimed at enhancing the employability of over one million young people in Lagos by 2030, providing them with the tools to thrive in an increasingly competitive job market.

“This programme is about equipping our youth with the requisite digital skills to not only make them more employable but also expand their horizons and capabilities,” Sule stated. “The world of work is evolving rapidly, and we need to ensure that our students are prepared for these changes.”

The second phase of the programme, themed “Maximizing the Transforming Capabilities of Artificial Intelligence in the 21st Century Workplace”, will run from October 26 to November 12, 2024. It will feature training in entrepreneurial skills development alongside core digital skills, with a focus on critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving.

Sule noted that this initiative marks a shift from traditional rote-based learning, which he said has left many young graduates struggling to adapt to the modern workplace. “We are moving away from the old ways of learning that do not translate into meaningful skills. This programme is designed to bridge that gap, ensuring our graduates are not left behind,” he added.

The three-week programme will see participation from industry experts across various sectors of the economy. Representatives from Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Lagos State College of Health Technology (LASCOHET), and Lagos State College of Nursing (LASCON) will be among the key institutions involved.

With an emphasis on matching global standards in digital skills training, the programme promises to offer a broader scope of employment possibilities for graduates from Lagos’ tertiary institutions.
