The Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) continued its ambitious drive to uplift family health and combat malnutrition by bringing its flagship “Ounje L’Ore Awo” program to the Lagos Island division. This comprehensive food and nutrition initiative, which emphasizes the well-being of women and families, was launched on Friday in the Lagos Island Local Government Area, benefiting 120 women.
Leading the initiative, Mrs. Bolaji Dada, Commissioner for WAPA, highlighted the program’s alignment with national Food and Nutrition policies and underscored the Ministry’s dedication to tackling malnutrition across Lagos. “Women play a vital role in the family, especially when it comes to ensuring nutritious meals at home,” Dada emphasized.
Lagos State’s WAPA recently achieved the highest ranking among 13 government agencies on the 2023 Food & Nutrition policy implementation index, boasting a national score of 66.93%. Dada attributed this success to the Ministry’s holistic approach and community-centered programs like “Ounje L’Ore Awo,” which are building healthier communities across the state.
Reflecting on the program’s guiding principle, “You are what you eat,” Dada stressed the importance of nutrition for physical, mental, and emotional health. “Proper nutrition is the foundation for thriving communities,” she noted, urging residents to adopt healthy, informed eating habits.
The “Ounje L’Ore Awo” program has made a mark in several communities, including Ikorodu, Eti-Osa, Alimosho, and Somolu, and is set to reach more regions, such as Badagry, in the coming weeks. Earlier this year, WAPA also played a significant role in launching Lagos State’s five-year Multisectoral Plan of Action for Food and Nutrition (2025-2029), reinforcing its dedication to food security and public health.
Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Job Creation, Princess Omolara Lawal Olumegbon, praised WAPA’s expansion efforts in Lagos Island, emphasizing the need for inclusive programs that address the diverse needs of residents in all areas.
Nutritionist Shola Malomo, who also spoke at the event, advised attendees on balanced diets and food hygiene, urging mindful eating practices to enhance overall health. Mrs. Oluyemi Kalesanwo, Permanent Secretary at WAPA, closed the event with thanks and urged beneficiaries to adopt healthier eating habits and inspire their families to contribute toward “a Greater Lagos for all.”
