The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached its speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, over allegations of statutory and financial misconduct. Obasa, who has faced multiple controversies, including allegations of misappropriating N17 billion to fix an Assembly gate and owning over 60 bank accounts linked to his Bank Verification Number (BVN), was removed after a unanimous decision by the Assembly.
Obasa, representing Agege Constituency 1, had served as speaker since 2015 but faced mounting criticism over alleged abuse of office and gross misconduct.
He has been replaced by his deputy, Mojisola Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1. Meranda, a former Chief Whip of the House, now becomes the first female Speaker in the history of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
In her new role, Meranda will be supported by Mojeed Fatai, the new Deputy Speaker.
Obasa’s impeachment marks a significant shift in the leadership of the state legislature, bringing an end to his controversial tenure and ushering in a historic moment with Meranda’s leadership.
