A senior Nigerian police official on Monday praised officers of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) for their role in fighting crime nationwide, urging them to uphold professionalism, integrity and respect for human rights.

Mrs Margaret Ochalla, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the FCID, spoke at an end-of-year celebration and Christmas carol held at the department’s headquarters in Alagbon, Lagos, describing the gathering as a time for reflection and renewed commitment as 2025 draws to a close.

“I want to express my deep gratitude to officers across all ranks for your effective service,” Ochalla said. “You have demonstrated courage, patience and resilience, ensuring that criminal activities are intelligently investigated and addressed in line with the law.”

She said the work of FCID personnel had helped strengthen public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force and reinforced core values such as justice, accountability and the rule of law.

Ochalla stressed that effective crime fighting must be rooted in due process and respect for human rights, noting that professionalism does not require shortcuts or abuse of power.

“Our adherence to lawful investigative procedures ensures that our work remains credible, defensible in court and fair to all parties involved,” she said.

She highlighted the department’s impact in tackling financial crimes, fraud, threats to life, gender-based violence, kidnapping, cybercrime, and drug- and ammunition-related offences.

“The disruption of criminal networks, recovery of unlawfully acquired assets and prevention of potential breaches of public peace have contributed meaningfully to public safety across Lagos State and beyond,” she said.

Acknowledging the sacrifices made by officers, Ochalla noted that many personnel work long hours away from their families and face physical and emotional risks that often go unnoticed.

“Your hard work has not gone unnoticed, and your contributions remain a cornerstone of our collective success,” she said, wishing officers and their families good health and renewed strength in the coming year.

Senior police officers from other commands attended the event, which also featured musical performances by Nigerian artists Sonny Neji and Zakky Azzay.
