Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, the member of the House of Representatives for Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency, who died early Wednesday after a brief illness.
Onanuga, popularly known as “Ijaya” in political circles, served as the Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives until her demise. She was 59.
In a condolence message, Governor Abiodun described her death as a monumental loss to Ogun State and the nation at large.
“Without mincing words, her death came as a rude shock to all of us in Ogun State. It was both devastating and sudden; we have truly lost an extraordinary amazon,” the governor stated.
He further eulogized the late lawmaker as a fearless leader, loyal party member, and great mobilizer who made significant contributions to the advancement of women and the well-being of her constituents.
“Her courage was exemplary, and her loyalty was exceptional. We will sorely miss her. However, we take solace in her immense contributions to humanity and the good of all,” Abiodun added.
The governor extended his condolences to the leadership and members of the House of Representatives, led by Speaker Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, and prayed for the strength of her family to bear the loss.
Former Ogun State Governor and Senator Ibikunle Amosun described Onanuga’s passing as a profound loss for Ogun State and Remoland.
“It saddens my heart that Ijaya, as she was fondly called, would succumb to death at a time when her expertise, experience, and service are still needed. She was a vibrant lawmaker and a committed grassroots politician who made impactful contributions to the development of Remoland and Ogun State,” Amosun said.
Senator Olamilekan Adeola, representing Ogun West Senatorial District, also expressed shock and sadness over her death.
“I received the news of the passage of Hon. Onanuga with shock and sadness. She was a fearless politician and public servant who always prioritized the people’s interests. Her reelection and elevation as a principal officer in the National Assembly testify to her competence and dedication,” Adeola stated through his media adviser, Kayode Odunaro.
He prayed for the repose of her soul and for her family to find strength in this difficult time.
