In a landmark decision reflecting his commitment to justice and compassion, Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has granted clemency to 43 convicts, including those on death row and serving life sentences.
The governor’s decision, announced on the day of his official swearing-in, follows recommendations from the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, chaired by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN.
“This decision is a testament to Governor Aiyedatiwa’s belief in second chances and the potential for rehabilitation,” Dr. Ajulo stated. “It is His Excellency’s responsibility to ensure that our justice system reflects mercy and humanity.”
Under this initiative, eight inmates have been granted outright release. Additionally, 15 convicts previously sentenced to death by hanging have had their sentences commuted to various prison terms, while 20 individuals serving life imprisonment have received reduced sentences.
Dr. Ajulo further emphasized that the move aligns with the governor’s broader vision to reform the penal system and facilitate the reintegration of former offenders into society.
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s decision has been widely praised by legal experts and human rights advocates as a step toward a more rehabilitative justice system in the state.
