Ondo State Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has granted clemency to 117 convicts in a major decision aimed at promoting rehabilitation and second chances. This move, which comes as part of the state’s Justice Sector Reforms, was made following recommendations by the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.

Among those pardoned, 19 convicts will be released outright, while others facing the death penalty will have their sentences commuted to life imprisonment. Many inmates will also see their sentences reduced, offering new opportunities for reintegration into society.

Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, the State Attorney General and Chairman of the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, stated, “The compassionate gesture underscores Governor Aiyedatiwa’s unwavering commitment to decongest correctional facilities in Ondo State and is a vital component of ongoing Justice Sector Reforms.”

He emphasized that the Council’s recommendations were based on thorough assessments of each case, considering the nature of the offenses, length of incarceration, age, health, and behavior of the inmates. “The approval for these releases not only represents a step towards mercy but also reaffirms the belief in the potential for change and redemption within every individual,” Dr. Ajulo added.

Governor Aiyedatiwa signed the release orders on September 27, 2024, with the changes set to take effect on October 1, coinciding with Nigeria’s 64th Independence celebrations.
