Governor Aiyedatiwa mourns the passing of the retired Air Force Captain, who served as Ondo’s first Governor.
The Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has expressed deep sorrow following the death of the state’s first Military Administrator, Group Captain Ita David Ikpeme (rtd), CON. Ikpeme passed away at the age of 89 after a brief illness. The news of his death was conveyed to Governor Aiyedatiwa by the Ikpeme family in a letter signed by Iquo Ikpeme on Wednesday.
Governor Aiyedatiwa paid glowing tribute to Ikpeme, who served as the first Governor of Ondo State from 1976 to 1978, after the state was created out of the old Western Region during the military regime of General Olusegun Obasanjo. He acknowledged the late Ikpeme’s immense contribution to the foundation and development of the state.

“Group Captain Ita David Ikpeme was not just a leader; he was a statesman of extraordinary stature. His leadership helped shape the early development of Ondo State, and his legacy will continue to inspire us for generations to come,” Governor Aiyedatiwa said in a statement.
“He was a devoted administrator, a pillar of his community in Calabar, and a symbol of selfless service to the people of Ondo State and Nigeria at large,” he added.
The Governor extended heartfelt condolences to the Ikpeme family and offered prayers for the repose of the soul of the late statesman. He also prayed for comfort and strength for the family as they mourn their loss.
“The government and people of Ondo State stand with the Ikpeme family at this difficult time, and we will provide the necessary support to ensure that late Ikpeme is given a befitting burial,” Governor Aiyedatiwa assured.
Ikpeme’s remarkable contributions to the early years of Ondo State will forever be etched in the annals of the state’s history.
