Tinubu grants emergency approval to beef up security around FCT

2 Mins read

In a proactive move to address the rising security concerns within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has swiftly granted emergency approval for the acquisition of digital tracking devices. This strategic decision is aimed at strengthening the ongoing efforts to combat prevalent issues such as kidnapping and other violent crimes in the FCT.

During his inaugural monthly media chat for the year in Abuja on January 22, 2024, FCT Minister Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike disclosed this pivotal development. President Tinubu’s prompt approval is viewed as a critical step in promptly equipping security agencies, signaling a transformative shift in the FCT’s security landscape.

Barr. Wike underscored the importance of this decision, emphasizing how the lack of sufficient equipment has contributed to recent security incidents. He lauded President Tinubu’s decisive approval, highlighting its efficacy in eliminating delays inherent in the standard procurement process.

The sanctioned digital tracking devices are anticipated to empower security agencies with the capability to precisely trace criminals to their specific locations within the city, thereby curbing criminal activities. The Minister stressed the urgency of maintaining a proactive stance in the ongoing battle against insecurity.

Additionally, Barrister Wike revealed supplementary measures aimed at enhancing security efforts. The FCT Administration is set to provide motorcycles to facilitate targeted movements of security agencies, especially in challenging terrains. This initiative is designed to fortify the operational capacity of security forces addressing insecurity in the nation’s capital.

The Minister shared insights gained since assuming office, including the Nigeria Police Force’s request for motorcycles to access areas inaccessible by vehicles, such as remote and mountainous regions. He reiterated the commitment to promptly address the identified needs of various security agencies.

Recognizing the collaboration with the Directorate of State Security (DSS), Barr. Wike emphasized the significance of proactive measures. He underscored the government’s resolve to engage local communities, area councils, and vigilante groups to enhance information sharing and community involvement in addressing insecurity.

As part of a comprehensive strategy, the Minister highlighted that kidnapping incidents often occur in the boundary areas of the FCT. The FCT Administration plans to collaborate with neighboring states, including Nasarawa, Kogi, Niger, and Kaduna, to collectively address and eliminate insecurity along shared borders.

Barr. Wike reassured the public that sustained efforts, combined with increased collaboration and support, will contribute to reducing criminal activities. He commended the Nigeria Army’s endeavors and expressed optimism that, with sustained motivation, security forces would make significant progress in combating criminals operating in extensive forested areas.

In a bid to bolster security in commercial transportation, the FCT Administration announced a new directive. Henceforth, all commercial vehicles in the FCT must undergo registration and be painted in the colors of the FCT. This measure aims to ensure accountability and enhance passenger safety.

In terms of infrastructure development, Barr. Wike outlined plans to establish three terminals in the fiscal year, providing designated boarding points for buses and taxis. This initiative seeks to reduce crime and enhance the safety of commuters in the FCT.

In conclusion, the Minister called for increased motivation for security operatives, advocated for stiffer penalties for criminals, and urged continued cooperation from residents to secure lives and property in the FCT. The emergency approval for tracking devices signifies a proactive response to the security challenges facing the nation’s capital.
