10 things you may not know about late former Minister Onaolapo Soleye

The death of former Minister of Finance, Dr. Onaolapo Soleye came as a rude shock to many Nigerians.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari and other eminent Nigerians have been mourning the great economist.

Here are ten things you may not know about him.

He was born on Saturday, 11 November 1933 in Abeokuta.

He served as Minister of Finance for 20 months during the military regime of Major General Muhammadu Buhari.

He was a Commissioner for Finance and Industry in Ogun State.

He served on the board of the Obasanjo Presidential Library.

He was preceded as Finance Minister by
Sunday Essang and succeeded by
Kalu Idika Kalu.

He attended Baptist Boys’ High School, Abeokuta, London School of Economics and Political Science, UK University of Manchester, USA.

Soleye was a lecturer at the university of Ibadan.

He rejected proposals to drastically devalue the naira.

As Finance Minister, he decided to print new Naira notes in April 1984, to prevent the repatriation of Naira through smuggling.

He died four days after his 90th birthday.
