In a bid to enhance the capacity of women journalists in Nigeria, Nigeria LNG Limited successfully concluded another edition of the #NLNGChangeYourStory workshops on Thursday.

The workshop, held from January 30th to February 1st, 2024, aimed at equipping female journalists with advanced digital communication and social media skills to effectively report on gender-based issues.

Sponsored by NLNG, the workshop gathered women journalists from various editorial sections and members of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in Lagos. Participants underwent intensive training on mobile and multimedia journalism, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience.

Mr. Andy Odeh, NLNG’s General Manager of External Relations and Sustainable Development, reiterated the company’s commitment to Diversity, Equality, and Inclusiveness. He emphasized the pivotal role of women journalists in shaping narratives and influencing public opinion towards a more inclusive Nigeria.

“Our dedication to capacity building stems from the belief in the immense potential of women journalists,” said Mr. Odeh. “Recognizing their pivotal role in shaping narratives, influencing public opinion, and contributing to sustainable development goals, we empower them with essential skills to reshape their stories and, consequently, mold the stories of our nation.”

Highlighting the workshop’s significance in empowering women journalists with essential skills in digital communication and social media, Mr. Odeh stated that the #NLNGChangeYourStory workshop reflects NLNG’s vision of embracing new technologies and platforms to articulate narratives that resonate in the fast-paced digital age.

Aisha Bura Ibrahim, the National Chairperson of NAWOJ, represented by Lilian Okokwo Ogabu, the association’s National Deputy Chairperson, applauded NLNG for supporting women with digital communication skills. She emphasized the importance of positioning women journalists for the future, particularly in reporting the realities of women and children, including the girl-child, in Nigeria.

Led by seasoned journalist Mr. Dan Mason in collaboration with The Journalism Clinic, under the guidance of Mr. Taiwo Obe, the workshop provided a transformative experience for the participating journalists. Leveraging their wealth of knowledge and experience, the experts adeptly guided participants through the nuances of digital communication and social media, empowering them to take control of their narratives and shape the nation’s stories.

Since its inception in 2015, the #NLNGChangeYourStory workshop has benefited over 90 journalists, reinforcing their digital communication and social media competencies. The workshop stands as a testament to the transformative power of state-of-the-art training, equipping journalists with the confidence and skills to embrace digital communication and social media effectively.
