The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has honoured two marine professionals, Prince Gbadamosi Hakeem and Captain Shakirudeen Lamidi, as they retire from the Lagos State Civil Service after 35 years of service.

Hakeem, a marine operations supervisor, was recognised for his role in managing LASWA’s fleet and overseeing the deployment and operational readiness of boats across the state’s waterways.

He also supervised boat captains and deckhands and helped enforce operational and safety standards, LASWA said in a statement.

Hakeem began his public service career with the now-defunct Lagos State Ferry Corporation before joining LASWA. The authority said his experience and knowledge of marine operations also made him a mentor to younger personnel.

Lamidi, a senior boat captain, also started his career with the Lagos State Ferry Corporation before joining LASWA in 2008.

During his career, he was recognised for his navigational skills, professionalism and focus on waterways safety, the authority said.

LASWA said Lamidi’s knowledge of Lagos waterways and his experience in boat operations earned him the respect of colleagues, passengers and other stakeholders.

The authority said both retirees had contributed to passing maritime knowledge and skills to younger captains and marine personnel.

LASWA said their careers spanned important periods in the development of water transportation in Lagos and thanked them for their service to the sector.

The authority wished the two retirees good health and fulfilment as they begin life outside active public service.
