Mentees receive hands-on training aboard ABS-classed MV ONONEZE as programme advances technical skills

A ferry safety development and mentoring programme led by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has completed a training module focused on marine engine systems, giving participants practical exposure to vessel operations.
Module Four of the programme, held in August, combined self-paced learning, expert discussions and onboard training designed to strengthen participants’ understanding of marine engineering and engine systems, LASWA said in a statement.
The training was facilitated by Jeremiah Akwemioh, a Nigerian Navy veteran with experience in marine engineering. Participants also held a virtual “Ask the Expert” session with Interferry mentors Joep Bollerman, vice president of passenger ships and director of the Cruise Ship Centre of Expertise at Lloyd’s Register, and Francesco Ruisi, global passenger ship segment director at Lloyd’s Register.
The practical component took place aboard the MV ONONEZE, an American Bureau of Shipping-classed vessel owned by Fymak Marine & Oil Services Nigeria Ltd.
The vessel is powered by four Cummins main engines and four propellers, with a bow thruster and combined output of 5,368 kilowatts (7,200 brake horsepower), LASWA said.
The trainees observed the operation of the main engines and auxiliary systems, including generators, purifiers, sewage treatment plants, air compressors and piping systems.
LASWA said the onboard session allowed participants to connect classroom learning with the operational realities of running a passenger vessel.
The agency acknowledged the vessel’s management and crew, including Captain Aniekan Udo, Chief Officer Abiodun Erewa, Chief Engineer Emmanuel Ezekudo and engineer Paul Etarijakpere, for contributing operational insights to the training.
The programme is supported by Interferry, FerrySafe, LASWA and the Lagos State Government, with Shari Corrigan, Interferry’s director of conferences and finance and executive sponsor, and Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, special adviser to the Lagos governor on Blue Economy, among those recognised for their support.
The programme will move to Module Five, focused on Safety Management Systems, in September. The module will be led by Mike Corrigan, chief executive officer of Interferry, LASWA said.
