The Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, on Friday performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the ₦1 billion Senate Building at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo City. The ceremony, which coincided with the institution’s 6th Convocation, marked a major step toward advancing education and healthcare in the state.
Describing the project as a “strategic investment” in the university’s future, Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasized the significance of quality infrastructure in fostering excellence.
“The quality of infrastructure and human resources in an institution such as UNIMED is of utmost importance. This Senate Building will stand as a symbol of our collective dedication to excellence in education and healthcare,” he said.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to UNIMED by approving ₦500 million as the first tranche of the project and an additional ₦250 million counterpart funding for the Olu Akinkugbe Faculty of Pharmacy.

In celebrating the university’s achievements over the past decade, Aiyedatiwa commended its management, staff, and students for their contributions to its growth.
“I am particularly impressed by UNIMED’s trajectory of success. It reflects our shared vision of placing Ondo State at the forefront of education and healthcare in Nigeria,” the governor stated.
The convocation also included the conferment of honorary degrees on prominent individuals, including the Osemawe of Ondo Kingdom, Oba Victor Adesimbo Kiladejo, who was installed as the university’s new Chancellor, alongside former Governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko and Chief Isaac Akintade.
The Vice-Chancellor of UNIMED, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, highlighted the institution’s progress in his address, noting its decade-long evolution into a hub of innovative programs tailored to contemporary needs
“UNIMED has successfully produced three cohorts of medical doctors in ten years, a clear testament to our commitment to academic excellence,” Fatusi remarked, while thanking the governor for his unwavering support and financial contributions.
As he addressed the graduating students, Governor Aiyedatiwa urged them to embrace compassion, innovation, and lifelong learning in their professional journeys.
