Ondo State is in mourning as Governor Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) has succumbed to the battle against prostate cancer and leukemia at the age of 67. A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Akeredolu secured his re-election in October 2020 and was sworn in for a second term in February 2021.
Throughout his second term, the late governor faced persistent health challenges, leading to a prolonged medical leave that began in June. Despite his return to Nigeria in September and the formal transfer of power to Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in December, Akeredolu’s health struggles persisted. His attempt to govern from Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, sparked public outrage.
As Ondo State grieves the loss of a dedicated leader, Deputy Governor Aiyedatiwa steps in to fulfill the governor’s responsibilities in an acting capacity. Governor Akeredolu leaves behind a legacy of public service and legal expertise that will be remembered by the people of Ondo.
